Reducing electromagnetic field exposure in a bedroom can be difficult. Signals may arrive through several walls and windows from mobile phone masts, neighbouring Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones and other wireless equipment. Moving or switching off your own devices is an important first step, but it cannot control sources outside your property.
YSHIELD SAFECAVE tents offer a practical answer when permanent building work is unsuitable, unaffordable or simply not possible. Sold in the UK by Beneficial Environments, these enclosed EMF shielding tents create a defined sleeping space made from electrically conductive silver-coated fabric. They can be used at home, in rented accommodation or while travelling.
Unlike an open-sided bed canopy, a SAFECAVE tent surrounds the sleeping area on every side and closes with a zip. This enclosed construction is central to its performance: gaps and open edges can allow radiofrequency signals to enter and reduce the effectiveness of any shielding system.
How does a SAFECAVE EMF shielding tent work?
The tent fabric is made from 85% nylon and 15% silver. The metallic silver coating makes the material conductive, allowing it to attenuate high-frequency electromagnetic fields rather than behave like an ordinary textile.
In practical terms, a SAFECAVE acts as a portable Faraday cage around the user. It is designed to reduce radiofrequency fields from sources such as:
- mobile phone base stations;
- Wi-Fi and neighbouring wireless networks;
- cordless phone systems;
- smart meters and other wireless transmitters; and
- frequencies used by current 4G and 5G services.
The fabric has been measured from 600 MHz to 40 GHz using recognised test methods. The quoted attenuation figures apply at 1 GHz, and performance varies by frequency, so a single dB figure should never be treated as identical performance across the entire spectrum.
The conductive enclosure can also reduce low-frequency electric fields. However, it should not be confused with shielding against low-frequency magnetic fields, which behave differently and usually require source reduction, distance or specialist magnetic shielding materials.
42 dB or 44 dB: what does the rating mean?
The full-size SAFECAVE tents have a quoted shielding attenuation of 42 dB at 1 GHz, while the compact pop-up model is rated at 44 dB. These are substantial laboratory attenuation figures, especially for a lightweight and portable textile enclosure.
Decibels use a logarithmic scale, so the difference between an unshielded and shielded reading may be large. Real-world results still depend on the strength and direction of the incoming fields, the frequency being measured, correct closure of the entrance and the condition of the fabric, seams and zip.
That is why measurement matters. An EMF survey can establish which frequencies and sources are present before shielding is chosen. Follow-up measurements can then confirm what the installed tent is actually achieving in that particular room.
Which YSHIELD SAFECAVE tent should you choose?
Beneficial Environments offers two main formats: a compact single-person pop-up tent and a taller two-pole tent available in three bed sizes.
| Model | External dimensions | Suitable mattress width | Attenuation at 1 GHz |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pop-up single | 95 × 210 × 55 cm | Single sleeping space | 44 dB |
| Single | 100 × 205 × 160 cm | Up to 90 cm | 42 dB |
| Double | 135 × 205 × 170 cm | Up to 120 cm | 42 dB |
| Super-King | 175 × 205 × 170 cm | Up to 160 cm | 42 dB |
Dimensions are subject to the manufacturer’s stated tolerance. Check the current product specification and measure the intended floor area before ordering.
Pop-up single tent
The pop-up model is the simplest choice for one person. Its sewn-in frame opens without separate assembly, and a carrying bag is included. At just 55 cm high, it is a sleeping enclosure rather than a walk-in tent. Its compact format and 44 dB rating make it particularly useful for travel or occasional use.
Single, double and Super-King tents
The larger SAFECAVE tents use two poles and provide far more internal height. The single and double versions are intended for one person, while the Super-King accommodates two. YSHIELD recommends placing a mattress on the floor inside the enclosure. These models suit longer-term bedroom use while remaining much easier to relocate than permanent wall, ceiling, floor and window shielding.
When is a shielding tent the right solution?
A SAFECAVE is especially useful for tenants, frequent travellers and anyone who cannot modify the structure of a building. It can also provide a targeted sleeping-area solution where shielding an entire room would be disproportionate.
The tent is not automatically the first step in every property. If the dominant sources are under your control, switching off wireless equipment at night, replacing Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet and removing electrical devices from the bedside may be simpler and cheaper. Where strong external radiofrequency fields remain, an enclosed shielding tent can make a dramatic difference without major installation work.
Do not use a mobile phone, Wi-Fi device or other wireless transmitter inside the closed tent. A device may increase its transmitting power as it struggles to connect, while the shielding enclosure can contain energy produced inside it. Put devices into aeroplane mode, switch off wireless functions or keep them outside the tent.
Care, appearance and service life
Silver fabrics need more care than ordinary tent material. They can discolour over time and may show marks even when new. This is a normal characteristic of exposed silver and does not, by itself, prove that the fabric has stopped shielding.
Frequent movement, folding, rubbing and unsuitable washing can shorten the material’s service life. The larger tents may be washed on a gentle 30°C cycle and the pop-up model may be hand-washed at 30°C, using the specified TEXCARE detergent. Do not bleach, iron, tumble-dry or dry-clean the fabric.
The SAFECAVE fabric contains a substantial metallic silver coating, not nano-silver. Because the tents are hygiene products, returns or exchanges are normally excluded once supplied. Size, access, ventilation preferences and the intended mattress should therefore be checked carefully before purchase.
Create a measured low-EMF sleeping environment
YSHIELD SAFECAVE tents are one of the most effective portable options for reducing radiofrequency exposure around a bed. Their fully enclosed design, high air and light permeability and tested 42–44 dB attenuation distinguish them from decorative canopies and unverified “EMF protection” products.
The best results come from treating the tent as part of a measured strategy. Identify the sources, reduce what you control, choose the correct size and verify the result after setup. Beneficial Environments can supply the SAFECAVE range and advise on EMF surveys, product selection and the wider steps needed to create a genuinely lower-EMF bedroom.
